Could You Qualify for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)?

(MoneyHippo.com) – Energy can be one of the biggest expenses depending on where you live and the time of year. Many people aren’t aware they might qualify for assistance through a federal plan, the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). The benefit can help you pay the bills you have to heat and cool your home and also provides help with “energy-related home repairs.” You may already qualify if you receive other low-income benefits like Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) or the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP).

To find out if you are eligible for the help, fill out the quick questionnaire at the bottom of the Benefits.gov page. Then, navigate to this map, click on your state, and contact your local LIHEAP office. Each state has income requirements, but they must follow federal guidelines. For example, in 2022, a family of four must make less than $41,625 annually to qualify for the program.

The US Department of Energy (USDOE) federally funds the plan and supplies grants to state agencies to administer the program to qualifying citizens to keep them safe from the elements. State agencies distribute the money throughout the country and territories based on need.

Contact your local office to find out if you qualify.
